Juke joint: vernacular term for an informal establishment featuring music, dancing, gambling, and drinking, primarily operated by people in the South Eastern United States. The term "juke" is believed to derive from the Gullah word “joog”, meaning rowdy or disorderly. A juke joint may also be called a "barrelhouse".
Continuing the label’s genre-defying approach, Air Recordings is pleased to announce they’ve signed the hotly tipped, Juke (aka Joe Lambert). The first single includes the tracks ‘Swing City’ and ‘Like It Or Not’, and precedes a debut album due for release in late 2009.
Juke’s sound sits neatly between early 20th century jazz and blues, and 21st century electronica - though we’d like to stress that Juke wakes up early most mornings, usually in a pleasant mood, and hasn’t yet sold his soul to the Devil at a crossroads (though he’s open to negotiations). Musically, it’s the kind of style you’ll find at the outer edges of Bestival and the Big Chill.
Lambert’s other guises include Caper, the dubstep project behind ‘Hybrid’, a big favourite with Switch & Sinden, who’ve snapped it up for their forthcoming Fabric Live album. Joe is also one half of Jellybass, whose ‘Transatlantic’ track featured Canadian MC and DJ Format collaborator, Abdominal.
‘Swing City’ and ‘Like It Or Not’ have already received early plays from Kiss’s more experimental shows.
